I gave a keynote yesterday at the Australasian Talent Conference on Social Media on the future of social media. The audience was composed of about 250 corporate recruiters, corporate communication  and corporate marketing professionals from all over Australia.

My main message was that there are 6 things that you should be keeping close watch on if you want to see where social media will be heading over the next 5 years.

The categories I use include: 1.Crowdsourcing assessment,   2.Automatic Social Screening,   3.Sentiment Analysis,   4.Reputation/Brand management,   5.Location-Based Services,   6.Personal Online Security

All of these have implications for personal privacy and underline the fact that there is nowhere to hide in the Internet age.  Wikileaks is showing more clearly than we would like to see how even government secrets and protected documents are easily obtained a spread over the Internet.

Analytical tools are being applied to “grock” your likes, dislikes, political persuasion, and personality so that both marketing and recruiters can more effectively screen you in or out of a job or persuade you to buy a service of product. But as these tools become more sophisticated, so will we. Managing your online presence will become a skill and require time.
