Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff of Forrester have written a book called Groundswell, Winning in a World Transformed by Social Networks which talks about how social networks are being used and who is using them. This is interesting data and their related blog is good at keeping up the discussion. The challenges that all social networks face, including those that are face-to-face, are how to keep people in contact and engaged. Virtual tools such a Twitter, IM, SMS, and VOIP all seem likely candiates to become core to helping maintain virtual connections. How much contact and how often is needed to maintain a relationship? I am sure there is research out there somewhere about that. If you have any idea whnat or where or by who, let us know.
