Every year over a thousand learning and development professionals, along with vendors and academics, get together at Online Educa Berlin to discuss the latest in learning technology. Take a look at this to get a taste of last year's conference.
Jay Cross and I were both privileged to give plenary session talks last year.
Jay did a keynote on informal learning and I spoke on the future of learning processes and technologies. You might want to see Jay's blog which has invaluable information on learning and learning technology.
This year I am returning to chair a panel discussion on the changing nature of learning in today’s company. This session brings together Chief Learning Officers from leading companies with leading suppliers aimed at teasing out how best to use technology to increase knowledge capital in today's companies.
As you all know, I am a fervent believer that the ultimate solution to the talent shortage will be to develop the talent we need in a more proactive and deeper manner than we have for the past 30 years. Both retention and engagement rise when employees are learning new skills and are being offered the corresponding opportunity to put that skill to use.
Throughout much of the twentieth century organizations focused on employee development and created the skilled workforce they needed. However during 1970s and 1980s, organizations reduced employee development in order to cut costs and because there were sufficient skilled people for the short term. We are now all faced with the consequences of that change, and hence the focus on more effective hiring and better training and development. Online Educa's huge attendance shows the level of interest in development and the need to in corporate technology into the learning process.
